HAILEYBURY IS RENOWNED FOR ITS ACADEMIC RESULTS, HOWEVER STUDENTS ALSO ACHIEVE IMPRESSIVE RESULTS IN MANY DIFFERENT SPORTING ARENAS, TOO.

The winter sports season at the Berwick campus is a busy time when students of all ages switch up a gear, put in some extra practice, and get ready to compete.

For some students, their sport takes them around the state or country – and in some cases, it even takes them overseas.

In April, Year 5 student, Koby Bilandzic, travelled to Spain and Portugal to represent Australia in the IberCup European Soccer Tournament. In June, the talented 11-year-old will pack his suitcase again and travel to England to train with the prestigious Manchester City youth development program.

Koby will be based at the Premier League club’s stadium in Manchester and will have an opportunity to show off his talents to scouts searching for the future stars of the game.

Winter is also a busy season for Year 1 student, Jett Keeley, who has won a swag of state medals in cross country. Haileybury has a team of more than 100 students who compete in cross-country events each winter.

Jett, seven, only took up running a year ago but his talent and dedication to running for kilometres over all kinds of terrain have helped him thrive at state and national level.

“Cross country is a sport that emphasises individual achievement as well as teamwork and sportsmanship,” says Mark Reed, Haileybury’s Head of Cross Country.

“It can provide a great opportunity for students to stay active and develop a lifelong love of running.”

Haileybury offers students a choice of 17 sports during winter including rugby, netball, soccer, basketball and football. There is also the opportunity to join the school’s equestrian team to develop their equestrian skills. At the Tintern Horse Trials earlier this year, Haileybury’s two Equestrian Teams placed 2nd and 4th.

Avril Charman, 16, is part of the Equestrian Team at Berwick and, in June, she will be one of the youngest competitors at the Melbourne International Horse Trials. She rides her two horses, Bella and Hamish, four to six times a week while also staying on top of schoolwork.

“I fit in everything with the help of my family and teachers. I also make sure I’m efficient when I’m in class and that helps me manage my workload,” she says. When Avril graduates from Haileybury, she hopes to keep riding and competing while studying at university.

There’s a sport for everyone this winter at Haileybury Berwick!
