CUTTING HAIR AND SLEEPING ROUGH FOR A CAUSE – HAILEYBURY’S BERWICK CAMPUS

THERE WERE A FEW NERVOUS SMILES AS VOLUNTEER STUDENTS
COURAGEOUSLY STEPPED IN TO THE SPOTLIGHT DURING THE ANNUAL GIRLS NIGHT IN EVENT AT HAILEYBURY’S BERWICK CAMPUS.

Boys Night In

Plenty of raffle tickets had been sold, with the prizes being an opportunity to cut the hair of the volunteers. Scissors were wielded and the sound of snipping filled the air as 16 students and a teacher had their hair cut, and a teacher had their head shaved, for a good cause. The highly-anticipated hair styling session raised more than $16,500 for the World’s Greatest Shave to support the Leukaemia Foundation. Party games, pizza, cup cake decorating, dancing and a photo booth were also part of the night that attracted 160 students in Years 5-8.

“At the end of the night, the girls joined together to perform a dance called ‘This is what girls do’. It was one tremendous party with most
girls wearing their pyjamas and having a fantastic time,” says Deputy Head of Middle School (Girls) – Edrington, Tessa Kerekes.
“A Leukaemia Foundation representative accepted the funds that our students raised and made it very clear how the money they’d raised
would make a difference to people affected by leukaemia.”

Stephanie Chen, Girls Middle School Social Justice Captain, said Girls Night In always unites the school. “We are proud of every girl for their contribution, whether donating money or sacrificing their hair. There were a few nerves, but everyone felt a great sense of achievement,” she says.
Boys Middle School students opted for their own Boys Night In, with both events part of Haileybury’s strong Social Justice program that runs
across the school.

The program underscores to students the importance of respecting and living values including fairness, equality and human rights. It also
encourages students to show initiative and commitment to being connected to the communities where they live and to giving back and
supporting those in need.

During the Boys Night In, students braved the elements and slept outside in the school grounds with only a sheet of cardboard and
a sleeping bag for shelter. The aim of the night was for students to glimpse the challenges of homelessness.

There were also activities for students to take part in, such as navigating their way through an escape room and a woodwork session that ran
throughout the night.

Along the way, the students raised $5,700 for Mission Australia to support the assistance the charity provides to the men, women andchildren living on Melbourne’s streets.
