Sports Is More Than The Score Beaconhills Teacher

Teaching young students about the physical benefits of sports is just one part of specialist physical education classes in the junior school at Beaconhills College.

Physical Education teacher Renyce McConnell said students also learnt that being active can support their emotions, allow them to ‘clear their minds’ and interact socially with others in a positive way.

Ms McConnell said Physical Education classes always focused on students doing their best and supporting their team or classmates.

“This features strongly in our classroom agreements in our Junior School Physical Education lessons,” she said.

“We don’t shy away from scoring games and activities…rather we focus on teaching students that in life we will win things and lose things – and we need to be able to accept the score or the results.

“We often refer to a quote from Debra Demaline Maxted; ‘the game is never as important as the people who you play it with’.”

Ms McConnell said the quote strongly connected to the Beaconhills College values of Respect, Compassion and Integrity. It highlighted the idea that while everyone steps onto the sporting field or court with the idea of winning, it’s the way that each person conducts themselves that is often remembered.

“If you have given your personal best and shown respect, compassion and integrity in the way you have played, you can’t ask much more of yourself.”

Ms McConnell is a former Beaconhills student who returned to the College in 2005 after completing her teaching rounds. She studied for an Exercise Science degree at ACU and did her Diploma of Education at RMIT. Psychology is her other teaching method. Over the years, she has been the driving force behind the school’s Jump Rope For Heart fundraising initiative.
