Explicit Teaching Model Lays Solid Foundation at Haileybury

The cornerstone of the Junior School curriculum delivery, implemented across all Junior campuses, is our innovative, research-based Explicit Teaching Model. CEO and Principal Derek Scott believes a strong grounding in spelling, reading, writing comprehension and mathematics sets students up for optimal learning in other subjects, and to function well in the community. Two of the main features of this method are The Warm Up and I Do, We Do and You Do.
The Warm Up
This learning strategy is employed during the first 10-15 minutes of a reading, spelling, writing, mathematics or Inquiry lesson. Students review core concepts from the previous lesson, helping to refresh their knowledge and recall what they have learned from short-term to long-term memory storage. This also primes them to better receive information from the upcoming lesson as it relates to what they have already learned.
I Do, We Do and You Do
One of the key benefits we provide our students is our commitment to the individual and their learning journey. This is exemplified within the explicit instruction framework. In the ‘I Do’ section of the lesson, the teacher will thoroughly explain and demonstrate the concepts being taught. “We Do” is when the teacher comes alongside students to ensure the lesson content is being understood, providing immediate feedback and support. When students show they are confident and competent, they are encouraged to move on to “You Do” – independent engagement with coursework at their own level of ability.
